What specs matter most when comparing 3D printers?
For most buyers, build volume and technology matter most. Build volume sets the largest model you can print in one piece; technology (FDM vs resin) determines detail, material range, and workflow. After that, look at enclosure (for engineering materials), print speed (for big or frequent jobs), and price-to-feature ratio. Match the specs to what you'll actually print rather than chasing the highest numbers.
Is a more expensive 3D printer always better?
No. Past roughly $300, extra money mostly buys convenience — larger build volume, an enclosure, faster speeds, multi-color — not necessarily better print quality. A $250 auto-leveling printer produces excellent PLA prints. Pay more only for the specific capabilities you need, which the chart above makes easy to spot.
